Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery

Nikka Whisky Sendai Factory (Miyagikyo Distillery) is a Nikka whisky base-spirit factory in Aoba Ward, Sendai. As Nikka’s second distillery, it produces a more floral, light style compared with the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido. The expansive site (about 200,000 m²) was designed to preserve nature in line with the founder’s belief that “whisky is nurtured by nature,” and the red-brick scenery harmonizing with the Miyagikyo landscape is worth seeing on its own. The distillery offers free tours where guides explain the production process and history, followed by tastings; the shop sells distillery-limited and rare whiskies, making it irresistible for fans. Tours are reservation-based, so book in advance. Access: on weekends/holidays from January to December, a shuttle bus from JR Senzan Line “Sakunami Station” is convenient (about 7 minutes). From central Sendai, take a bus from JR “Sendai Station” to Sakunami Onsen (about 60 minutes). Drivers and children are offered soft drinks for tasting, and visiting by car is also OK.
