Shichiri-Mihama Beach

Shichiri Mihama is a beach facing the Kumano-nada Sea, stretching from Kumano City to Kiho Town in Mie Prefecture. Its length is about 20 km, forming a remarkably beautiful coastline that runs across Kumano City and Kiho Town. The gentle shoreline created by windbreak forests and clean sandy beach has been recognized with multiple selections, including "Japan’s 100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches," "Japan’s 100 Natural Wonders to Preserve in the 21st Century," "Japan’s 100 Best Beaches," and "Japan’s 100 Famous Pine Groves." It is also known as a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles, and from May to September, entry by cars and motorcycles is prohibited. The coast is so beautiful that you may feel like swimming, but because the sea becomes deep suddenly, swimming is prohibited. However, the sunrise seen from here is exceptionally beautiful, so it is recommended to wake up early and visit just to see it. Access is easy, with the beach reachable in about five minutes on foot from Kumano-shi Station. Along the nearby national highway, you’ll find roadside stations as well as restaurants and cafes, so after admiring the sea, it’s also recommended to take a break while still enjoying the coastal view.
