Obiyamachi Ichiban-gai

Obiyamachi Ichibangai is the name of a shopping street in Kochi City. It is home to Kochi Daimaru, the prefecture’s only department store. You can also find Kiyooka Coral Shop, established in 1891, a rare shop where you can buy coral ornaments and accessories. There are also restaurants where you can enjoy Tosa cuisine—often at comparatively affordable prices compared with more “tourist-spot” settings—making it a good place to eat well. The arcade is lively with events and even features whale monuments. Because it is covered, you can enjoy sightseeing even on rainy days. As a traditional shopping street, it also has practical daily-life shops like pharmacies, making it a dependable place for both tourists and locals. With the downtown area nearby, if you’re staying at a hotel near Kochi Station, it’s a great area to drop by. You can walk through this shopping street on the way to Hirome Market. It is considered Kochi’s main street and is enjoyable for all ages. Access is about a 3-minute walk from the Ohashidori streetcar stop.
