Chikurinji Temple
Chikurin-ji is a temple in Kochi City and the 31st temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Along with Kirido Monju and Abe Monju, it is counted as one of Japan’s Three Great Monju temples. Located in the forest of Godaisan, it is rich in nature and is also one of Kochi’s three famous gardens; it is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. From Chikurin-ji you can see Urado Bay. The main hall is designated an Important Cultural Property. The whole Godaisan area is a Kochi Prefectural Urban Park, and it also includes attractions such as the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden. The temple is also a setting in the Yosakoi-bushi song, and together with its prefecture’s only all-hinoki (cypress) five-story pagoda, it’s a must-see sightseeing spot. Many pilgrims visit daily, creating a lively atmosphere. When you pass pilgrims, it’s customary to greet anyone with a simple “konnichiwa,” and they will usually respond. Nearby pilgrimage temples are Zenraku-ji (No. 30) and Zenjibu-ji (No. 32). Access is about 20 minutes by bus from Harimaya Bridge.
