Kusatsu hotspring Naraya
Naraya is a ryokan in Kusatsu Onsen, founded in 1877 (Meiji 10) near the center of town, close to the Yubatake. It draws Kusatsu’s oldest source, the “Shirahata” spring that gushes on the southwest side of the Yubatake, into the inn. The greatest attraction is its hot spring managed by skilled “Yumori” craftsmen—guardians of the bath water—who maintain the onsen in optimal condition, a traditional aspect of Japanese culture. Naraya’s onsen method brings the source water in via natural slope, cooling it as it flows, then stores it once in an on-site “yu-goya” (hot water hut). After resting the water overnight, the 55–56°C source is lowered to about 46–47°C, then when sending it into each tub, they adjust the amount of hot water at the spout—less on hot days, more on cold days—keeping bath temperature at an ideal 41–42°C so you can enjoy the best bathing experience anytime. With its location near the Yubatake, it’s also perfect for a post-bath stroll. Rooms range from standard guest rooms blending Japanese relaxation and modern interiors to higher-grade, varied “Sen-yu-tei” rooms with different atmospheres, offering many options.
