Akita City Folk Performing Arts Center (Neburi Nagashikan)
The Folklore Performing Arts Heritage Center (commonly known as the Neburi Nagashi-kan) is an annex of the Akita City Red Brick Local Museum. It faces Omachi-dori together with the Red Brick Museum, but the two are separated by Kanto Odori, and it is about a 5-minute walk between them. Because you can tour both facilities with the shared ticket "Red Brick Local Museum & Neburi Nagashi-kan Common Admission," this is a popular sightseeing spot for Akita City visitors. The building is easy to recognize thanks to the large Kanto pole lantern displayed prominently at the front. Inside, the open atrium design creates an impressive space: on the 1st floor you can see festival floats used for the Tsuchizaki Shinmei Shrine Festival (Hikiyama event) and the Bonten displayed for the Taheizan Mitsuyoshi Shrine Bonten Festival, while the 2nd floor introduces Akita City’s folk events and performing arts. Making use of the atrium, you can also try a hands-on experience of lifting a Kanto pole. Other activities include trying on a happi coat, and on weekends and holidays from April to October (13:30–14:10 only), Kanto demonstrations are also held. In addition, from the 1st-floor connecting corridor you can access the Former Kaneko Family Residence—composed of one main house and one storehouse and designated a city tangible cultural property—at no extra cost beyond the Neburi Nagashi-kan admission fee.
