Statue of Takeda Shingen
The Takeda Shingen Bronze Statue depicts Takeda Shingen, a warlord who represents not only Kofu but all of Yamanashi Prefecture, modeled after his appearance in the Battle of Kawanakajima. It stands immediately outside JR Chuo Main Line “Kofu Station” South Exit, embodying the imposing presence of the region’s legendary leader. The statue is 3.1 meters tall and sits atop a granite base, making for a dignified and heroic figure befitting a famed Sengoku-era general. The statue was funded by donations gathered through a call from the local Takeda Shingen Support Association, aiming to uplift the spirit of Yamanashi residents, with contributions from supporters both inside and outside the prefecture. It was completed on April 12, 1969 (Shingen’s death anniversary) and donated to Kofu City. It originally stood on the south side of the fountain plaza in front of Kofu Station, but due to redevelopment it has been in its current location since 1985. During cherry blossom season (around late March to early April), Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom on both sides of the statue, and the area becomes a lively hanami spot.
