Shosenkyo Gorge

Shosenkyo Gorge is part of Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, located on the upper reaches of the Arakawa River (Fuji River system) north of Kofu City, Yamanashi. It is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and is also recognized as “Japan Heritage.” Walking along the promenade beside the gorge, you can see cliffs and many unusual rock formations. One highlight is Sengataki Falls, where water pours powerfully through the narrow gaps of granite carved over long years by the river’s flow. While the drop is about 30 meters (not extremely high), the abundant water volume makes it very impressive, and the area around the falls is filled with refreshing negative ions. You can also enjoy the great nature of Shosenkyo from a ropeway. No matter the season, it’s a spot where you can fully enjoy the charm of each time of year: spring brings purplish-pink mitsuba azaleas, summer offers fresh greenery with sparkling sunlight filtering through leaves, and autumn is a true highlight—Shosenkyo’s fall colors are a must-see. Winter’s snowy landscape is also beautiful, making it a destination with a “best season” all year round. Access to Shosenkyo Gorge: by car, about 40 minutes from Chuo Expressway “Kofu-Showa IC.” By train and bus, from JR Kofu Station South Exit take the Green Line Shosenkyo Line bus (~40 minutes) or the Shosenkyo Takigami Line (~60 minutes). By taxi, it’s also about 40 minutes from JR Kofu Station South Exit.
