Uesugi Shrine

Uesugi Shrine is located in Yonezawa City, reached by taking an 11-minute bus ride from JR Yonezawa Station and getting off at “Uesugi Jinja-mae.” Built in 1876 (Meiji 9), it enshrines Uesugi Kenshin as well as Uesugi Yozan, famous for his words “Naseba naru…” and for rebuilding the domain’s finances during hardship. In 1919 (Taisho 8), a major fire in Yonezawa destroyed many buildings and homes; most shrine buildings were lost, and the current Uesugi Shrine was rebuilt afterward. During the reconstruction, the shrine hall was designed by Ito Chuta, a Yonezawa-born architect known for works such as Tsukiji Honganji and Meiji Jingu. The approach to the shrine is well maintained, and the “Dragon” and “Bi” war banners fluttering along the way catch visitors’ attention. The shrine is in Matsugasaki Park, where you can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and vivid autumn foliage, making it pleasant to stroll. After worship, it’s recommended to stop by “Keishoden,” which displays Uesugi-family treasures. More than 300 items—armor, swords, paintings, and more—are housed there, and you can also see the real “Helmet of Love” associated with Naoe Kanetsugu.
