Tanize-no-Tsurihashi Bridge

Tanize Suspension Bridge is a steel-wire suspension bridge spanning the Kumano River in Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture. Connecting Uenochi and Tanize, the bridge measures 297 meters in length and 54 meters in height, making it the longest suspension bridge in Japan used for daily life. Previously, residents crossed via wooden bridges that were repeatedly washed away by floods. After World War II, villagers pooled their money to construct the current bridge. Crossing the swaying bridge requires courage, but the surrounding mountains and the beautiful river below offer breathtaking scenery unique to Totsukawa. For safety reasons, no more than 20 people may cross at one time. Nearby are a village-operated parking lot, souvenir shops, and a campsite beneath the bridge. Totsukawa Village has no railway access, so public transportation relies on Nara Kotsu buses. The bus route from Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station to JR Shingu Station via JR Gojo Station and Totsukawa Village takes about six hours and is known as the longest bus route in Japan.
