Lake Haruna

Lake Haruna is one of Gunma Prefecture’s representative tourist destinations, welcoming over a million visitors annually. It is a crater lake formed within the caldera of Mt. Haruna. The lake’s circumference is about 4.8 km, its area about 1.2 km², and its deepest point is around 12–15 m. Efforts to improve water quality and protect and foster fireflies have led to fireflies appearing in recent years before summer, boosting its popularity—especially around the tourist information area on the south side of the lake, where they are said to appear often. The elegant lights of fireflies in the dark are beautiful and soothing. The seasonal scenery is also very beautiful: dazzling fresh greenery in spring and summer, vivid red foliage in autumn, and the dignified frozen winter landscape—views from the ropeway above are especially impressive. Activities include sightseeing boats on the lake and camping along the shore. With convenient access—about 20 minutes from central Takasaki—it’s a spot where you can fully enjoy great nature.
