Okayama Korakuen
Okayama Korakuen is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens alongside Kenrokuen in Kanazawa and Kairakuen in Mito, and it is one of Okayama Prefecture’s most popular sightseeing spots. Its historical buildings and beautiful seasonal scenery are highly valued, and it is registered as a cultural property designated as a “Special Place of Scenic Beauty.” Although the garden is spacious, it is carefully maintained throughout. Classic Japanese seasonal scenes—cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, plum blossoms, and more—are all beautifully enjoyed here. At the annual “Tea-Picking Festival” held every May since 1956, visitors can enter the lush green tea fields in the garden and actually experience tea picking. In recent years, with the spread of social media such as Instagram, many tourists enjoy taking photos in kimono against the beautiful scenery, and there are kimono rental shops nearby. If you want to stroll in kimono, it’s recommended to research and reserve a rental shop in advance. Because nature and historical architecture are blended together, it’s enjoyable for everyone from small children to seniors, making it a great spot for families, couples, and also solo travelers who want to relax and take in the scenery. Access: from JR Okayama Station (Korakuen Exit / East Exit) bus terminal, platform 1, about 10 minutes by bus. By car: about 20 minutes from the Sanyo Expressway “Okayama IC.”
