Narukokyo Gorge

Naruko Gorge is a roughly 2.6 km-long gorge in the Naruko Onsen area (Nakayamadaira Onsen district) of Osaki City, Miyagi. Carved by erosion from the Otanigawa River, the valley reaches about 100 m deep. The dramatic cliffs are lush green from spring to summer, and from around mid-October to mid-November it becomes a famous autumn foliage spot. From JR Rikuu East Line “Naruko-Onsen Station,” it’s about 10 minutes by car. The gorge runs parallel to National Route 47. The contrast of remaining green with red and yellow leaves is spectacular, drawing many visitors each year; during the foliage season, nearby roads can become congested, and temporary buses run between JR “Naruko-Onsen Station” and “Nakayamadaira-Onsen Station.” There are nature walking paths for enjoying views while strolling. Currently, part of the Naruko Gorge promenade is closed, and only short sections are open from both the Nakayamadaira-side entrance and the Naruko-side entrance (9:00–16:00). The Ofukasawa Promenade is a 2.2 km loop starting from the Naruko Gorge Rest House. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Note: from late November to late April, the Rest House, viewpoints, and walking paths close for winter.
