Yunohira Observatory

Yunohira Observatory is an observation deck on Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture, located at the 4th station of Kitadake. It is the closest observatory to Sakurajima’s crater, offering excellent views of volcanic activity. Because visitors cannot get any closer to the crater beyond this point, it is known as the closest place the general public can approach the crater, attracting many tourists daily. Looking at the rugged mountainside and smoke rising from the crater, you can feel the power of nature. From the observatory, you can see Kinko Bay and the Kagoshima city area, and with luck, you can see as far as Kirishima and Kaimondake. Recently, heart-shaped stones have been found hidden in the observatory’s stone walls; there are seven hearts within the observatory area, and it is said that if you find them all, you will be happy. It is also known as a spectacular night-view spot, drawing many visitors in the evening. The observatory is on the second floor with 360-degree views, and the first floor has a shop where you can buy souvenirs. Access: about 15 minutes by car from Sakurajima Port. You can also reach it via the Sakurajima Island View sightseeing loop bus.
