Sakurajima Ferry

The Sakurajima Ferry is the ferry service used to reach Sakurajima, the volcanic island in Kagoshima Bay, Kagoshima Prefecture. It operates between Kagoshima Port and Sakurajima Port. The service originally began after eruptions of Sakurajima created a need for a regular route for commuting to school, and it continues to operate today. The regular service runs 24 hours a day, traveling between Kagoshima Port and Sakurajima Port in about 15 minutes. In addition to the regular service, summer seasonal night-cruise sightseeing boats also operate. There are detour cruises for tourists that pass near Kose (Kamise) and offshore of the Taisho lava field on the way to Sakurajima. “Kinko Bay Rediscovery Cruises” and private charter cruises are also offered from time to time; these cruises are well regarded for views that you normally can’t see. Another famous highlight is the udon shop “Yabukin” inside the ferry. Its udon with satsuma-age (fried fish cake) is a signature item, and it became a Sakurajima Ferry specialty because people order it during the short 15-minute crossing, have it prepared, and eat it on board. Access: about a 7-minute walk from Kagoshima Station.
