Tojinbo Cliff
Tojinbo is a spectacular natural wonder where columnar cliffs carved by wave erosion continue for over 1 km. The grandeur of this landscape created by nature is breathtaking, and the sheer cliff faces are truly overwhelming. Geologically, the columnar joints of pyroxene andesite are said to be extremely rare, and it is often said that similar formations exist in only three places in the world, including Tojinbo. The cliffs rise about 25 meters above the sea, and looking down can be spine-tingling—part of the site’s powerful appeal. It is also designated a Natural Monument of Japan, and taking in the view from Tojinbo Tower, with vistas reaching as far as the Noto Peninsula, is also a great option. The surrounding area is developed as a sightseeing zone with souvenir shops and sightseeing boat cruises, making it a place you can enjoy all day. The nearby Oshima Island, visible from Tojinbo, is also known as a "sacred island" and is designated a Natural Monument along with Tojinbo, so a nature walk while enjoying the scenery is recommended. Tojinbo is also famous as a filming location for Japanese TV dramas. To get there, it takes about 15 minutes by bus from Mikuni Station on the Echizen Railway.
