Kaike Kikunoya

Kaike Kikunoya is a ryokan in Kaike Onsen, one of the San’in region’s famous “beautifying-skin” hot springs, with a spectacular view of the Sea of Japan right in front of you. The inn’s onsen is a free-flowing (source-fed) sodium-calcium chloride spring that is gentle for guests of all ages. Because the source temperature is quite high (about 65–83°C), the water is adjusted with added water to reach a comfortable bathing temperature. Amenities are well stocked, so you can enjoy the baths even if you come empty-handed. The Kaike waters are said to dissolve and remove oils on the skin while leaving a thin, lotion-like veil, which is one reason it’s called a “beautifying-skin” hot spring. A particular highlight at Kikunoya is the breakfast: dried belaga-rei (flatfish) from nearby Sakaiminato is praised for its tender flesh and aroma. Sea-facing rooms let you fully take in the Sea of Japan views, making this an especially refreshing place to stay. Access: by train, take a bus (Nihon Kotsu or Hinomaru Bus) from JR San’in Main Line “Yonago Station” bound for “Kaike Onsen” and get off at “Kanko Center” (about 30 minutes), then walk about 10 minutes. It’s about 20 minutes by car from Yonago Station. By car, it’s about 7 km / 15 minutes from Yonago IC (Yonago Expressway).
