Asaba Ryokan
Asaba Ryokan is a hot-spring inn in Shuzenji, Izu, with nearly 530 years of history. Often mentioned as an inn people dream of visiting someday, it is one of Shuzenji’s most renowned traditional ryokan. It began when Asaba Yakuro Yukitada opened a lodging temple (shukubo) in the lush Shuzenji area, surrounded by green mountains and a beautiful river. The inn cherishes Japan’s seasonal beauty, letting guests feel nature even while staying in their rooms—soothing views of garden trees, the sound of the river, and birdsong. There are 17 guest rooms, each with a different design. One simple room type, “Ohitoma,” is a single-room layout facing the Noh stage and stone stage almost directly. For rooms with private free-flowing hot springs, there are purely Japanese-style rooms and rooms with a bedroom. New detached guest rooms have also been added. Bathing options include an open-air bath overlooking bamboo and a pond, separate indoor baths lined with Japanese kaya-maki wood, and a private bath that requires no reservation—allowing you to enjoy Shuzenji’s source water, which has been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Famous Hot Springs,” as free-flowing spring water. Meals featuring local seasonal ingredients are also well regarded, with specialty dishes by season that satisfy both heart and stomach. Access: about a 7-minute drive from Izuhakone Railway “Shuzenji” Station; about 40 minutes by car from JR “Mishima” Station; about 50 minutes by car from Tomei Expressway Numazu IC or Shin-Tomei Expressway Nagaizumi-Numazu IC.
