Miyazaki Shrine
Miyazaki Jingu is a shrine that enshrines Emperor Jimmu (Kamuyamato Iwarebiko no Sumeramikoto), regarded as Japan’s first emperor, with his father Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto and his mother Tamayori-hime-no-Mikoto also enshrined. It is said to have been founded over 2,000 years ago by Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, a grandson of Emperor Jimmu and also a deity of Aso Shrine. The shrine is believed to bring blessings such as household safety, family harmony, safe childbirth, fertility, and success in exams and competitions, drawing worshippers from across Japan. The shrine buildings, made using Sano-sugi—a rare local Hyuga timber—were rebuilt in 1907 (Meiji 40). Many rituals are still performed, and the Miyazaki Jingu Grand Festival, affectionately called “Jinmu-sama,” is a large-scale festival known nationwide. A magnificent giant tree on the grounds—an Ooshirafuji over 300 years old—is designated a National Natural Monument. In spring, the yabusame (horseback archery) ritual held under cherry blossoms attracts crowds of spectators. Access: by car, about 20 minutes (about 10 km) from Miyazaki Expressway “Miyazaki IC.” By public transportation, get off at JR Nippo Line “Miyazaki Jingu Station” and walk about 10 minutes. From JR Miyazaki Station, it’s about 10 minutes by taxi. From Miyazaki Airport, use the airport bus to Miyazaki Station or Miyazaki Jingu Station, or about 30 minutes by taxi.
