Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden

The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden is a botanical garden in Kochi City, home to nearly 3,000 plant species. In 1999, the Makino Tomitaro Memorial Museum Exhibition Hall was built to commemorate Dr. Tomitaro Makino’s achievements. Dr. Makino is known as the “father of Japanese plant taxonomy,” and the garden features plants connected to him as well as landscapes designed in harmony with nature. Spread across 17.8 hectares, the grounds allow visitors to freely explore a wide variety of plants. Free guide services are also available. There are cafes and a museum shop, a plant library, events, and classes, making it enjoyable for both children and adults all day. The modern circular architecture of the memorial building was designed by architect Hiroshi Naito, and its design has received multiple awards; its open central structure creates a strong harmony between building and plants. If you love plants, it’s a must-visit and is popular with tourists as well. Access is via the MY Yu Bus departing from JR Kochi Station South Exit and Tosaterasu; about 30 minutes.
