Marugame Castle

Marugame Castle is a castle in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. The stone walls, built up from the inner moat, are said to reach a height of 60 m, making the overall height among the tallest in Japan. The unique “fan-shaped slope” of the walls, appearing more vertical toward the top, is striking to anyone. Built on Kameyama hill at about 66 m elevation, Marugame Castle has stood out as a landmark, watching over locals from above for 400 years since its construction. The main keep is designated as a National Treasure and can be viewed by anyone. On the same grounds, the Marugame City Museum displays historical and folk materials. Major events like the Marugame Castle Festival held during Golden Week and fireworks festivals also enliven the town. There is also a legend that when construction of the stone walls did not go well, a tofu seller became a human pillar sacrifice, leading to an urban legend that you can hear a tofu seller’s voice somewhere at dusk. Access: about a 10-minute walk from Marugame Station.
