Kotohira Kadan
Kotohira Kadan is a hot spring ryokan in Kotohira Town, located in the gate-town of Kotohira-gu and built along a mountainside on the bank of the Kanakura River. It is said to have hosted notable literary figures such as Akiko Yosano, Ogai Mori, and Hakushu Kitahara. The ryokan’s symbol is its prestigious sukiya-style detached villa rooms, a high-end accommodation you’d want to stay in at least once, featuring hinoki baths overlooking small inner gardens. The Seitei, where Hakushu Kitahara stayed, and the separate Enjukaku building—featured in Ogai Mori’s novel “Konpira”—offer rooms filled with luxury. Three lodging buildings are arranged around the garden, letting you view the Japanese garden’s seasonal beauty. Hot spring facilities include large public baths, rooms with open-air baths, and private open-air baths, and day-use bathing plans that include lunch and dinner are also available. Meals feature local specialties such as Sanuki “three livestock,” udon, and Setouchi seafood. Depending on the room, in-room dining may also be possible, so it’s best to ask in advance. Access: about 5 minutes by car from JR Kotohira Station, with free shuttle service available.
