Seisen-ryo Jersey Hut
Seisenryo Jersey Hut is a famous soft-serve ice cream spot located on the grounds of Seisenryo, developed in 1938 by Dr. Paul Rusch (an American known as the “father of Kiyosato development”). The soft-serve is so iconic that people say, “Seisenryo means soft-serve.” It is made from fresh milk from Jersey cows raised on nutrient-rich grasses at the Seisenryo Jersey Farm, combined with pristine water from the Yatsugatake mountains—creating a celebrated local specialty. In peak season, it is said to sell as many as 4,000 cones per day. Many say it becomes even richer and more delicious in winter, when the milk fat content increases. Beyond soft-serve, they also sell Jersey milk and yogurt made from the same milk. Freshly baked bread from the Seisenryo Bakery is also available at the hut; made with natural homemade yeast and carefully chosen ingredients, breads start from around 200 yen. Another popular item is the Seisenryo Burger, featuring an original combination such as a breaded and fried Jersey beef menchi-katsu, plus Jersey milk croquettes. Enjoy it with coffee brewed using local spring water for an extra-special taste. Souvenir recommendations include Yamanashi honey, local free-range eggs, and their proud baumkuchen made with plenty of Jersey milk. Access: by bus, a direct bus runs from Busta Shinjuku (about 3 hours 15 minutes). By train, take JR Chuo Main Line to “Kobuchizawa Station,” transfer to the JR Koumi Line, and get off at “Kiyosato Station.” By car, about 20 minutes from Chuo Expressway “Nagasaka IC.”
