Dan Dan Kouen Park
Dandan Square is a small station-front park on the east side of JR Yonago Station, a key hub in the San’in region where the JR San’in Main Line, Sakai Line, and Hakubi Line operate. Yonago Station is known as the birthplace of San’in railways, and rail service in the region began in 1902 (Meiji 35) between Sakaiminato and Mikuriya via Yonago. In line with Yonago’s image of aiming to be an international exchange city in the 21st century, an impressive monument clock tower stands in Dandan Square. The clock tower is about 12 meters tall and a little over 12 meters wide, evoking the steam locomotive from Kenji Miyazawa’s “Night on the Galactic Railroad,” and it often becomes a topic on social media. Because Yonago Airport has international flights, the spot is also popular with overseas visitors, who are frequently seen taking photos. Across from the park’s parking area is “Omiyage Rakuichi Yonago,” where you can buy souvenirs not only from Tottori but also from Shimane and the broader San’in region—handy to shop at the end of your trip without carrying items around earlier.
