Yubara Onsen

Yubara Onsen is a hot spring area in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture, blessed with alkaline simple hot springs. The alkaline water, beloved as a “beauty-skin bath,” springs out at around 40–45°C. Access is usually most convenient by private car, but for those who want to avoid driving in snowy winter conditions, shuttle buses and other services operate so tourists can visit year-round. Leisure options are also plentiful; especially in winter, you can enjoy winter sports. While this is from some years ago, in 2004 it reportedly ranked #1 nationwide for “hot springs with beautiful snowy scenery.” Surrounded by mountains and rich nature, it can be enjoyed as a cool summer retreat, for autumn foliage, and for winter’s snow-covered landscapes. Every August, the “Hansagi Festival,” inspired by the giant salamander (ōsanshōuo), is held; nebuta-style floats and parade floats walk through the onsen town with dancers, making it an event locals and tourists can enjoy together.
