Atomic Bomb Hypocenter
The Atomic Bomb Hypocenter is the exact ground zero point where the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 (Showa 20) at 11:02 a.m., and it is marked by a black granite monument. Along with the 9.7-meter-tall, 30-ton bronze Peace Statue and the Fountain of Peace in the same Peace Park, this is a key place where a moment of silence is observed every year on August 9 to mourn the victims and where a peace declaration is delivered to the world. Access to the Atomic Bomb Hypocenter by car is via the Nagasaki Expressway: exit at “Nagasaki Tarami IC,” continue via the Nagasaki Bypass, exit at “Kawahira IC (Peace Park / Showa-machi area),” then drive about 5 minutes toward the city center. By public transportation, take the tram bound for Akasako from JR Nagasaki Station, get off at “Peace Park” stop, then walk about 1 minute. The Atomic Bomb Hypocenter is located inside Peace Park. The “Nagasaki Sightseeing Route Bus” operated by Nagasaki Bus is also very convenient for tourism, as it circulates major city attractions such as Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral, Oranda-zaka, Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, Dejima, Peace Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum.
