Okama Crater

Okama Crater is one of Zao’s top sightseeing spots—a crater lake located between Zao’s Uma-no-se and Mt. Goshikidake. Because it is circular and shaped like a cooking pot, it is called “Okama.” As the lake surface color changes with weather and sunlight, it is also known as “Goshiki-ko (Five-Color Lake).” Its mystical beauty makes you feel the grandeur of nature. From Miyagi, you typically drive via the Zao Echo Line and Zao High Line to the Zao Katta summit area (Okama viewpoint). Spring offers snow corridors, and autumn offers stunning foliage drives. From Yamagata, you can reach Zao Kogen Katta Parking via the Zao Echo Line and use the Katta Lift. Note that the Zao Echo Line is open only from late April to early November, and you can only reach Okama during that period. From the Zao Summit Rest House at Zao Katta summit, it’s about a 3-minute walk to the Okama viewpoint. If you climb about 5 minutes to the Kattadake summit, you can enjoy a different angle. You can also visit Katta Mine Shrine at the summit and pray for safe travels. The area is around 1,670 m elevation, often foggy with sudden weather changes and low temperatures, so bring a jacket.
