Nishijin Textile Center

The Nishijin Textile Center is a facility operated by the Nishijin Textile Industrial Association, located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. “Nishijin-ori” is a general term for pre-dyed figured textiles produced in Kyoto’s Nishijin area, characterized by high variety and small-batch production. At the Nishijin Textile Center, visitors can experience the appeal of Nishijin weaving through the keywords: “See,” “Learn,” “Wear,” “Experience,” and “Buy.” Access is about a 10-minute walk from Imadegawa Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway, or right by the “Horikawa Imadegawa” bus stop using Kyoto City Bus routes 9 or 101 from JR Kyoto Station. First, “See”: you can enjoy a glamorous kimono show on the third-floor stage, showcasing Nishijin style. Next, “Learn”: through demonstrations of silkworm raising on the first floor, panels explaining production processes, and the third-floor reference room, you can learn broadly about Nishijin textiles and sericulture. For “Wear,” you can choose from over 150 casual komon kimono and try them on. For “Experience,” you can try hand-weaving a 20 cm × 30 cm table center. Finally, “Buy”: the direct-from-producer Nishijin textile shop offers a wide selection, making shopping enjoyable.
