Suzumushi Temple

Suzumushi-dera Temple is a Rinzai Buddhist temple in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City. Its formal name is Kegon-ji, but it is popularly called Suzumushi-dera because it raises bell crickets and their song can be heard year-round. In 1723 (Kyoho 8) in the mid-Edo period, it was founded by the monk Hotan to revive the Kegon sect. In addition to the principal image of Dainichi Nyorai, the temple also enshrines Jizo Bosatsu, and many visitors from across Japan come to pray for Jizo-related devotion, school success, good fortune, and auspicious relationships. The temple is especially famous for a monk’s sermon known as "Suzumushi-seppo," and after the talk, tea and traditional sweets are served. Beside the gate near the top of the stone steps stands the "Happiness Jizo" wearing straw sandals; it is said that Jizo will walk to grant your wish. A key rule is that you may make only one wish. Nearby are Matsuo Taisha, famous as a deity of sake, and the Moss Temple (Koke-dera), renowned for its beautiful moss garden, making it possible to visit on foot. If you take the city bus, get off at Matsuo Taisha-mae and walk about 15 minutes to reach Suzumushi-dera.
