Cape Muroto
Cape Muroto is a cape in Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean. It is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and is part of the Muroto-Anan Kaigan Quasi-National Park. It is also recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Known as a surfing spot, many young surfers come daily seeking rough waves. It has long been considered a dangerous sea area, and the coast features marine terraces, reefs, and unusual rock formations. Even in winter it stays warm, and subtropical plants flourish—very much “southern Kochi.” The Cape Muroto lighthouse is preserved as a historic “preservation lighthouse.” Despite its fame, transportation access is not very convenient, and the cape is quiet—ideal for enjoying grand scenery in peace. It’s also known as a “lover’s sanctuary,” often visited by couples. Recently, the Muroto School Aquarium (Muroto Haiko Suizokukan) has become popular; run with the Japanese Sea Turtle Association, it keeps about 50 species and around 1,000 marine fish. Fish swim in many places like pools and washbasins, making it fun for both kids and adults. Access is about 120 minutes by car from Kochi Expressway Nangoku IC.
