Kochi Prefectural Ryoma Sakamoto Memorial Hall
The Kochi Prefectural Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum is a museum in Kochi City dedicated to Sakamoto Ryoma. Exhibits include a Ryoma statue, the Kaientai code (Kaientai Yakki), and letters Ryoma wrote to his family. Items such as a letter written two days before his assassination addressed to Mutsu Munemitsu, the pre-suicide statement of Tokoroyama Gogichiro, and the Kaientai code are also on постоян display. There is also a John Manjiro exhibition room, portraits of Perry and other envoys, and a replica of the Smith & Wesson Model 2 said to have been owned by Ryoma. A recreated hanging scroll (based on the original that had blood on it) is displayed to help visitors imagine the scene in the room where Ryoma was killed. At the entrance, there is a handshake-style Ryoma statue with messages like “Shake hand ze yo!” and “Let’s connect hearts,” making it a fitting monument that reflects Ryoma’s character—be sure to take a photo while shaking hands. Access is via Tosaden Kotsu bus from JR Kochi Station bound for Katsurahama; get off at “Ryoma Kinenkan-mae,” then walk 2 minutes.
