Restoration Furusatokan
Ishin Furusato-kan is a history museum in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It exhibits materials about the Satsuma domain and Japanese history. Because Satsuma played major roles across much of the Meiji Restoration through the Russo-Japanese War, many important historical figures—Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi, Togo Heihachiro, Oyama Iwao, Yamamoto Gonnohyoe, and others—were connected to Kagoshima. In front of the museum is a bridge called Nanshu-bashi, from which you can see Sakurajima beautifully. The museum offers not only drama performances and documents for adults to immerse themselves in history, but also interactive features for children, such as a ‘strength contest’ with Saigo-don and other hands-on corners. There is also a photo spot where you can take pictures ‘with’ Saigo Takamori. The surrounding Kajiyacho area is itself full of historical sites, with many highlights such as the ‘History Road: Ishin Furusato no Michi’ and Taiga drama-related spots. Access: about an 8-minute walk from Kagoshima-Chuo Station.
