lake okushima
Okushiman Lake is an artificial lake created by the Shima River Dam at the very back of the Shima Onsen area. Its water is extremely beautiful and clear, with a mysterious cobalt-blue-like color. Even in photos it looks beautiful, but seeing the scenery in person is said to be moving. The downstream Shima River and Shima Lake are also known for their beautiful color, likely thanks to the water from Okushiman Lake. Beyond the water’s beauty, broadleaf forests spread around the lake, and in spring and summer you can enjoy vivid fresh greens, while in autumn the mountains turn colorful with foliage, creating beautiful landscapes together with the lake surface. The roads around Okushiman Lake are well maintained, allowing you to drive a full loop around it. Nearby are parks and viewpoints such as Akasawa Yasuragi Plaza, Tsuga Plaza, Inabukuro Seseragi Park, and on the downstream side of the dam, Hinatami Park—making it a pleasant area for walks.
