Yatsuo Historical Town
Yatsuo Townscape (Suwa-machi Hon-dori) is a spot where stepping in feels like you’ve warped back to the Edo period. Famous for the festival “Owara Kaze no Bon,” this area prospered from the Edo through Meiji eras. Its beautifully maintained scenery—stone paving, removed overhead wires, and careful streetscape preservation—earned it a place on Japan’s “100 Best Roads.” Along Suwa-machi Hon-dori you can find local specialties and sightseeing spots, making it perfect for a slow stroll. “Yamamoto Shokudo,” a restaurant in a renovated 100+ year-old traditional house, serves comforting home-style cooking. The long-established “Tamaasahi Shuzo” is a notable sake brewery whose products are not widely distributed; you can purchase directly only here. The “Yatsuo Owara Museum,” gathering the area’s history and culture, is also a must-see. For information and a place to connect, “Ecchu Yatsuo Base OYATSU” offers lodging and opportunities—making it a good first stop. Access: by car, ~20 min from Toyama-nishi IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. By train, take JR Takayama Line from Toyama Station to Ecchu-Yatsuo Station, then about 2 km (~30 min walk) or ~6 min by car.
