Harajiri Falls
Harajiri Falls is a waterfall in Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, located on the Ogata River. Selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, it is often called the “Niagara of the East” because a waterfall 120 meters wide and 20 meters high suddenly appears in the middle of flat countryside farmland. In front of the falls, there is a suspension bridge (also offering spectacular views) that allows you to see the waterfall straight on. You can also view the falls up close from above and from below. The cliff face features columnar joints, which you can admire at the same time. Nearby, there is Roadside Station Harajiri no Taki with a local products market and a restaurant. Toilets and public phones are available at all times, making it convenient for visitors, and it is a popular spot for tourists. Seasonal flowers also bloom around the roadside station, making it a soothing stop during sightseeing. Even just watching the falls can feel cleansing, and if you are lucky, you may spot a rainbow over the waterfall as a special bonus. Access to Harajiri Falls is about a 10-minute drive from JR Ogata Station.
