Oka Castle Ruins
Oka Castle Ruins are the remains of a castle that once stood in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. The site is famous as the inspiration for the beloved Japanese song “Kojo no Tsuki” (The Moon Over the Ruined Castle). On the castle hill of Tenjinyama, you can still see impressive high stone walls, the remains of the main gate, the former residence site of Nakagawa Kakuzayemon, and the Taiko turret remains. Many cherry trees are planted throughout the grounds, and in spring the Oka Castle Cherry Blossom Festival is held alongside a daimyo procession. The site is also selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. The castle grounds are vast—around 1,000,000 square meters—and areas such as the Nishinomaru (west bailey) ruins and the West Inner Partition ruins remain preserved. With so many highlights, you can also request guidance not only about Oka Castle Ruins but about Taketa City as well, as local guides are available. In autumn, you can enjoy colorful foliage, and in winter, snow transforms the ruins into a different kind of beauty. Even walking a full loop takes considerable time, so it is recommended to allow plenty of time and sightsee at a relaxed pace. Recently, the site has attracted many visitors not only from Japan but also from overseas, making it one of Taketa City’s leading tourist attractions. Access to Oka Castle Ruins is about a 15-minute walk from Bungo-Taketa Station.
