Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge
The Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge is Japan’s highest pedestrian-only suspension bridge, located in Kokonoe Town, Kusu District, Oita Prefecture. Spanning a valley 173 meters high and 390 meters long, the bridge offers breathtaking panoramic views from above. It crosses the Naruko River Gorge, part of the Chikugo River system, where you can see Shindo Falls, including both the male and female waterfalls. The 360-degree scenery is truly spectacular and has made this bridge one of Oita’s most popular tourist attractions. Because it is a genuine suspension bridge, visitors who are afraid of heights can wait at the observation plaza instead of crossing. Far more visitors than originally expected come here, making it one of the prefecture’s top sightseeing spots. Strong winds are common on the bridge, so wearing pants and sneakers is recommended, and tying up long hair will help keep your view clear. At the turnaround point, there are souvenir shops and stands selling local specialties such as hamburgers. Visitors must walk back across the same bridge to return. Access to Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge is via a 5-minute walk after getting off at the “Otsuribashi Nakamura-guchi” bus stop from Bungo-Nakamura Station.
