Mt. Yufu

Mount Yufu (Yufudake) is an active volcano located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. With an elevation of 1,584 meters, it is beloved by many hikers and climbers. It became widely known through the NHK drama “Kaze no Haruka,” but historically it also appears in classic works such as the “Bungo Fudoki” and the “Manyoshu,” and has long been revered as a sacred mountain. The summit is said to offer spectacular views of Mount Kuju, Mount Sobo, and Mount Aso. Visitors can also see Miyama Kirishima, an alpine azalea said to bloom only in Kyushu’s high mountains. Because you can drive to the Hebikoshi Observation Deck, another option is to enjoy the viewpoint without hiking. Mount Yufu also has Yufudake Onsen for drop-in bathing, and in seasons of lush greenery the mountain is breathtaking even from below. The mountain is designated as part of Aso Kuju National Park, and its scenery is beautiful from any angle. Nearby attractions include Tsukahara Onsen and Beppu Onsen, making the area a popular destination for tourists. Access to Mount Yufu is by taking a Kamenoi Bus bound for Yufuin from JR Beppu Station (Nippo Main Line) and getting off at “Yufu Tozanguchi,” then it is right nearby.
