Devil's washboard
Oni no Sentakuita (Devil’s Washboard) is a well-known sightseeing spot in Aoshima, Miyazaki Prefecture, where unusual rock formations spread across the shoreline. The appearance is likened to a washboard, giving it the name. Long ago, the rock was below sea level; after tectonic uplift brought it above the surface, it was shaped over long periods by erosion from seawater and rough waves. Because it is often submerged at high tide, visiting at low tide is recommended for the best experience. In 1945, it was designated a National Natural Monument. If you stay in Aoshima, some hotels provide rental bicycles, making cycling sightseeing convenient. Access: by public transportation, JR Nichinan Line “Aoshima Station” is nearby, or it’s about a 6-minute walk (500 m) from “Kodomo-no-Kuni Station.” Buses run from the Miyakoh City Bus Center in front of JR Miyazaki Station; taking the “Aoshima / Nichinan” route via Miyazaki Airport takes about 25 minutes. By car, it’s about 10 minutes from Miyazaki Expressway “Miyazaki IC” via Route 220, and about 10 minutes from Miyazaki Airport. The JR Kyushu sightseeing limited express “Umisachi Yamasachi” also stops at JR Aoshima Station on weekends.
