Teradaya
Teradaya is an inn and boat lodge in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, known as the place where the late-Edo period patriot Sakamoto Ryoma stayed. Because this area became a fierce battlefield in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in Keio 4 (1868), the original building was destroyed by fire, and the current structure was rebuilt afterward. Access to Teradaya is about a 5-minute walk from Keihan Railway Chushojima Station, or about a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Momoyama-Goryo-mae Station. Teradaya was the stage for major events in late-Edo history, including the "Teradaya Incident" in Bunkyu 2 (1862), when Arima Shinjichi and other radical Satsuma-domain figures gathered here to plot the assassination of the regent Kujo Hisatada and the Kyoto Shoshidai, and the "Sakamoto Ryoma Attack" in Keio 2 (1866), when Ryoma and Miyoshi Shinzō were assaulted by officials from the Fushimi Magistrate’s Office. In the garden on the west side of the building stands a statue of Ryoma. It is a must-visit spot for history lovers. Nearby are Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, Kizakura Kappa Country, and Otesuji Shopping Street, making it a great area to explore together.
