Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

The Bamboo Grove Path (Chikurin no Komichi) is a narrow, well-maintained bamboo-lined lane about 400 meters long in Arashiyama, Kyoto. It runs from in front of Nonomiya Shrine, passes along the north side of Tenryu-ji, and continues toward Ōkōchi Sansō. On sunny days, dappled light filtering through the bamboo is beautiful; on overcast days, the path can feel dim even at midday. The tall bamboo canopy is iconic, and the surrounding shrines and temples add historical depth, making it one of Kyoto’s sightseeing spots. Nonomiya Shrine, at the start of the path, is popular for matchmaking; historically it was where a Saio (imperial princess serving Ise Shrine) purified herself before departing for Ise, and it also appears as a setting in The Tale of Genji. In the Heian period, this area was home to aristocrats’ villas—away from the city center and rich in nature—so walking the bamboo path also lets you experience the natural atmosphere of Saga-Arashiyama. In early winter, the “Arashiyama Hanatōro” event lights up the area, offering a special view of illuminated bamboo.
