Kongofukuji Temple
Kongofuku-ji is a temple in Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, and the 38th temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Due to its location, subtropical plants thrive here. Kongofuku-ji is known for Kobo Daishi’s “Seven Mysteries,” including sites such as Yurugi-ishi, Kame-ishi, the torii said to have been attempted in a single night, Kameyoba, Daishi’s nail-scratched stone, the “Hell hole” (now filled in but still viewable), Nesasas, and the tide-level temizu-bachi. These are found along the walking route centered around the temple and extending toward Cape Ashizuri Lighthouse—try finding them as you walk. This area is said to be the greatest challenge for pilgrims: among the distances between pilgrimage temples, it is often described as the longest. However, because it is a “hard place,” it also rewards you with outstanding scenery. In front of the main hall is the Daishi Kame (stone), modeled after the legend that Kobo Daishi crossed the sea riding on a sea turtle; it is said that stroking its head brings happiness. The grounds are very large (about 120,000 m²) and include a Japanese garden and a nine-ring pagoda (Kurin Hoto), offering many highlights beyond the main worship hall. Access is about 90 minutes by bus from Nakamura Station.
