Ibusuki Onsen

Ibusuki Onsen is the collective name for the hot spring areas in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Ibusuki includes hot spring districts such as Surigahama Onsen, Yajigayu Onsen, and Nigatsuden Onsen, and it is especially famous for its sand baths. Around 1960 it reached a peak as a tourist destination and was even called the “Hawaii of the East.” While it is not as crowded today, it remains a strong and thriving destination. The sunamushi (sand-steaming) baths use hot springs that well up from the beach to warm the sand; guests lie down and have sand piled on them like a sand sauna, warming the body from the core. With the ocean spreading out in front, it is also popular as a sightseeing experience. The area has long been known as a hot-spring town, with many historic spots scattered around, including Yugan-gen Shrine, a deity associated with hot springs—showing how deeply hot springs are rooted in the town. Many ryokan are located near Surigahama Onsen, which is the most popular area for visitors. Access: take the JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line or the limited express “Ibusuki no Tamatebako” from Kagoshima-Chuo Station, and get off at Ibusuki Station.
