Southernmost Nishi-Oyama Station
Nishioyama Station is the southernmost station in Kagoshima Prefecture and also the southernmost JR station in Japan. Until 2003, when a monorail opened in Okinawa, it was Japan’s unchallenged southernmost station; now it is described as the southernmost JR station in Japan. After getting off, you’ll find a bright yellow ‘happiness’ postbox (still in service) and a ‘bell of happiness,’ making it a tourist spot. Because trains are infrequent and the station is unmanned, it is sometimes called a secluded station. It is surrounded by rural scenery, with ‘Satsuma Fuji’ (Kaimondake) visible beautifully. Commemorative admission tickets are sold at Yamakawa Station or Ibusuki Station. You can also get an arrival certificate at the nearby ‘Kaimon Ichiba Kyutaro.’ The nearby Nishioyama railroad crossing is also the southernmost crossing and another tourist highlight. In the canola flower season, fields bloom yellow and the Nanohana Marathon is also held. Access: about 15 minutes from JR Ibusuki Station.
