Lake Hibara
Lake Hibara is one of the lakes formed by the mid-Meiji period eruption of Mount Bandai. Stretching approximately 18 km from north to south and about 1 km from east to west, it has a long, slender shape. With a maximum depth of 31 meters and a shoreline of 37 km, it is the largest freshwater lake in the Urabandai area. The lake was naturally created when volcanic mudflows blocked valleys, resulting in a highly intricate shoreline. It is part of the Goshikinuma Lake Group, famous for appearing in different colors depending on the season and time of day. Visitors can enjoy sightseeing cruises that showcase the scenic Bandai Highlands, as well as seasonal landscapes including cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn foliage, and snowy vistas. The lakeside campgrounds offer barbecuing, while summer is popular for bass fishing and winter for smelt fishing on the frozen lake. Canoe tours glide gracefully across the water, with instructors providing clear guidance, making it safe and enjoyable even for children. Beginners to fishing can also feel at ease, as many nearby shops rent fishing gear.
