Senshu Park
Senshu Park is a park developed on the former site of Kubota Castle, which served as the residence of the Satake clan—the lords of the 200,000-koku Akita Domain—for 267 years across 12 generations, from 1602 (Keicho 7) until the return of feudal domains in 1869 (Meiji 2). The name "Senshu" is said to combine Akita’s "Aki" with "Sen" meaning long-lasting, reflecting a wish for enduring prosperity. The park is planted with many varieties of flowers, and its scenery changes with the seasons, making it a place you’ll want to visit again and again. In spring, the Senshu Park Cherry Blossom Festival is held, with many food stalls lining the paths beneath illuminated night sakura. In summer, beautiful lotus flowers bloom in the surrounding moat, and the contrast of elegant pink blossoms and lush green leaves is soothing to behold. In autumn, the foliage around the Kubota Castle Front Gate (Omote-mon) is especially recommended, and the vivid red trees make it a great photo spot. In winter, you can see "yukitsuri" snow supports, a seasonal tradition. The iris garden also features around 6,000 plants, including kakitsubata, hanashobu, and ayame. A recommended feature is the movable floating-pier observation deck, where you can enjoy refreshing waterside views and the seasonal moat scenery. Access is easy: about a 10-minute walk from JR Akita Station.
