Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine
Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine was established in 705 and is enshrined as the local tutelary deity for the area historically known as Arakura-go (Kai Province). Today, it attracts worshippers not only from the local community but also from across Japan and overseas. It is said to bring blessings for protection from misfortune, family harmony, safe childbirth, and child-rearing. The greatest highlight is the beautiful view from the grounds: the vivid red torii gate and the five-story pagoda “Chureito” (built to memorial service fallen war dead) together with Mt. Fuji create a superb photo spot. This scene is often used on overseas travel brochures to represent Japan—and notably, it was even featured on the cover of the “Michelin Green Guide Japan,” underscoring it as one of Japan’s representative landscapes. It becomes especially crowded during cherry blossom season in spring. Access: by train, get off at Fujikyu Railway “Shimoyoshida Station” and walk about 5 minutes. By car, exit the Chuo Expressway Fuji-Goko Line at “Kawaguchiko IC” and head toward Yamanakako; about 10 minutes.
