Tottori Sand Dunes
Tottori Sand Dunes were formed over a long period as granite from the Chugoku Mountains weathered into sand, was carried by rivers to the sea, and then piled up by strong winds blowing from the Sea of Japan side—repeating this process for ages until the dunes formed. The dunes show many expressions depending on climate and natural conditions; sunsets, clear starry skies, and even snowy landscapes can be breathtaking. A wide range of activities are available: fat bikes that can ride on sand, sandboarding (similar to snowboarding), paragliding, compact single-seater cars called “Geo Coms,” and even “sand-dune yoga,” a unique yoga experience on the dunes. The “Sand Dunes Lift” is also worth trying for panoramic views of the dunes embraced by the Sea of Japan. And of course, the sand dunes’ iconic camels are here too—you can take commemorative photos with them and even ride a camel for a dune stroll. On the west side of the dunes there’s a beach, and around the July sea-opening season, you can see a surprisingly ‘tropical’ scene of white sand and blue sea, unlike the typical image of the Sea of Japan. Access: by car, exit at Tottori IC (Tottori Expressway via Sayo JCT on the Chugoku Expressway) and drive about 20 minutes. By bus, take a Tottori Sand Dunes-bound bus from the JR Tottori Station bus terminal (about 20 minutes).
