Kyoto Aquarium
Kyoto Aquarium is an aquarium located inside Umekoji Park in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City. Opened in March 2012 under the concept of "Connecting Life with Water," it is a large inland aquarium and Japan’s first aquarium to use fully artificial seawater. In addition to exhibits featuring the Japanese giant salamander, the aquarium also showcases marine animals such as dolphins, penguins, and seals. Just after entering, visitors will find a large exhibition zone for the Japanese giant salamander, a nationally designated natural monument and the world’s largest amphibian, where you can observe these mysterious creatures up close. Deeper inside on the first floor is the aquarium’s largest tank, called "Kyoto’s Sea," where about 50 species swim through 500 tons of artificial seawater. Species rooted in Kyoto’s food culture, such as hamo (pike conger), amadai, and Japanese sardines, are also displayed. At the open-air dolphin stadium, bottlenose dolphin shows are held throughout the day, and with Umekoji Park as the backdrop, visitors can enjoy seasonal scenery as well—cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and autumn foliage.
