Lake Kawaguchi
Lake Kawaguchi is one of the Fuji Five Lakes, located in Yamanashi Prefecture near the center of Honshu. It is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is the second largest of the Fuji Five Lakes. From the lake, you can enjoy the overwhelming beauty of Mt. Fuji, and thanks to its excellent access from the Tokyo metropolitan area, it attracts many tourists from Japan and around the world—especially popular among international visitors. No matter what season you visit, you can enjoy the unique charms of that time of year, and there are many accommodation and dining options to match different budgets. Access to Lake Kawaguchi: by car from the greater Tokyo area, take the Chuo Expressway from Hatsudai Tollgate (about 80 minutes) to “Kawaguchiko IC.” From Yokohama-Machida IC, take the Tomei Expressway, exit at “Gotemba IC,” then via the Higashi-Fuji-Goko Road to “Fujiyoshida.” From Kawagoe IC, take the Kan-etsu Expressway to Tsurugashima JCT, then Ken-O Expressway, then Chuo Expressway via Hachioji JCT, and exit at “Kawaguchiko IC.” By bus, routes to Kawaguchiko operate from major terminals such as Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Narita/Haneda Airports, as well as Osaka, Nagoya, and Shizuoka. By train, take JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, then transfer to the Fujikyu Railway (about 43 minutes) to Kawaguchiko. Or from JR Gotemba Line “Gotemba Station,” take the Fujikyu Yamanashi Bus (about 70 minutes) to Kawaguchiko.
